Meet Mickey Johnson: A Q&A on Law, Life, and Leadership

Mickey Johnson poses in front of the Johnson Law Firm office.

Mickey Johnson, the founder, owner, and lead attorney of The Johnson Law Firm, wears many hats: small business owner, husband, father, Vice President of Communications for the San Antonio Trial Lawyers Association, and above all, a committed advocate for his clients. Mickey took a few minutes to sit down and share more about what drives him. We discussed career milestones, legal perspectives, and some of his local San Antonio favorites.

Journey to The Johnson Law Firm

Where are you originally from?

I grew up in San Antonio, but was born in Germany as my parents were in the Army.

Where did you go to school?

Coker Elementary, Bradley Middle, and Churchill High. I earned my undergraduate degree at UTSA and my J.D. from St. Mary’s University.

When did you know you wanted to be a lawyer?

After undergrad, I worked for three years as a communications professional at a nonprofit organization. While there, our team was licensing our brand kit out to other organizations, and this was the first time I had interacted with lawyers. I liked what they did and how they thought.

What motivated you to start your firm?

Mainly, I wanted autonomy over my day-to-day operations. I also looked up to several incredible mentors throughout my career, many of whom owned their firms. I remember thinking, They’re not any better than me, I can do that too.

Law & Justice Perspectives

How do you reconcile legal outcomes that conflict with your personal beliefs?

You have to draw a line in the sand. As lawyers, we’re not clients or witnesses; the cases we take didn’t happen to us. You can stay passionate about the work while also separating your identity from the outcome.

What role does race/sex/class play in legal outcomes today?

In theory, they shouldn’t play a role at all. However, in front of a jury, factors like these can absolutely come into play. Unfortunately, we can all carry unconscious biases.

Goals & Inspirations

What inspires you in your day-to-day life?

My family, I have a fifteen-month-old son, and of course, my amazing wife.

Do you have any current goals for the law firm?

I want the firm to hit $5 million in revenue.

What about any personal goals outside of the office?

I was recently baptized into the Catholic Church, and would like to continue bringing more people into the church.

The Personal Side of Things

One word to describe you?

Busy.

What is your favorite sport?

Basketball – Go Spurs Go!

What about your current Favorite musical artist?

Future.

Favorite San Antonio restaurant?

Chama Gaucha.

How do you unwind after a long day in the office?

Hiking or spending time with my son.

Coffee or Tea?

Coffee, hot!

At The Johnson Law Firm, Mickey Johnson’s communication skills, leadership, and client-centered philosophy define the firm’s culture. Whether he’s hard at work in the office, mentoring new attorneys, cheering on the Spurs, or out on the trails, his vision continues to move the firm forward and beyond.
